Remove flowers as they appear.[1]

For fresh use, harvest the leaves as they mature—about 6 weeks after planting.[1]

For maximum flavor, basil should be harvested when flower buds have started to form but before they begin to open.[2] Gather the leaves in the morning after the dew has dried, but before the temperature rises.[2]
