Terminology
- EC
- Electrical Conductivity
Purpose
The purpose of this lab is to start 4 kratky containers.
Procedure
Changes Made
1: Fill Containers
- Fill four 64 oz mason jars with 1700 mL distilled water.
- Add 1.417 g of fertilizer for a target 100 ppm Nitrogen.
- Wait at least 5 minutes then measure and note EC levels.
- Do a preliminary check of pH. If above 5, stop and check for the expected pH crash the next day.
2: Adjust pH
- If the pH is under 5.5, pipette 1 mL of potassium carbonate (GH pH Up) at a time, stir. Wait 5 minutes and re-check pH.
- Cap the jars and wait a day before planting to re-check pH.
Materials
- pH will be checked using 4.5-8.5 pH test paper from Micro Essentials Lab (Hydrion).
- Use a transfer pipette for pH Up adjustments.
- Rinse with DI water in-between adjustments and rest in a DI water beaker.
- Use a plastic straw to stir.
