I will inquire! I think for you, since you have a computer background, it may be okay. I think they probably just want to make sure students have half a clue about what bioinformatics even is.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does this opportunity align with your academic or career interests? (Maximum 100 words)
Currently, I'm trying to re-align my career into one that better follows my values in life. One of my long-term goals is to help people better understand their own health so they can better advocate for what they need. I started going back to school to hopefully learn about and understand the various data sources and data used by that site, how to read research articles, and how to apply that knowledge to pay it forward. This opportunity would be beneficial for learning about career paths into healthcare and help me explore how I can lead a beneficial life.
Tell us about a time you stepped outside your comfort zone to learn something new. (Maximum 100 words)
I felt very uncomfortable going back to school. School for me was historically associated with failure, I had dropped out of high school, so actually following through with that was very difficult for me. It's still difficult, in fact, and there are many aspects with college that I struggle with, but I've been consistent and I'm really proud of the progress I've made. This would require me to step out of my comfort zone as well, but I feel confident that I'd be able to connect with people, share my own experiences, and get the most out of the experience.
What do you want to learn/hope to gain during experience week? (Maximum 100 words)
I'm most interested in hearing about other's career paths, seeing as mine is a non-traditional career path as well. And as someone who started out writing software, I'm interested in learning how I can adapt my background and experience and apply it to a career in the bio-sciences. As well, there are a lot of aspects of health sciences that feel very mysterious still, so learning about all the work that goes into research and clinical trials, and connecting with people in the field, would be helpful.
If you could explore any topic in biopharmaceuticals, what would it be and why? (Maximum 100 words)
I would like to explore more about specialized pro-resolving mediators. I know there can be a lot of left-over inflammation from injuries or infections, so there's a very broad usage application for supplementing them. And I think with the western diet generally having less omega-3s than our mediterranean siblings, that there could be a lot of benefit to incorporating those, or utilizing their same pathways, to help clean up inflammation after, say, a bone contusion.
Statement of Purpose (Maximum 500 words)
For our internship, your statement of purpose should describe why you believe you are the right candidate and what you hope to accomplish professional and personally through participation. You may include brief information regarding research skills or past research experiences.
Currently, I'm trying to re-align my career into one that better follows my values in life. I've heard things about how there's significant knowledge gap between academics/doctors their patients, how autoimmune diseases can take several years to get diagnosed and tend to come in threes, and how certain genetic variants can alter the absorption of nutrients. I want to help people live less dysfunctional lives, and helping society advance medical knowledge. I think this opportunity will help connect me with people in related fields and explore a beneficial career.
In a few sentences, tell us why you're interested in this summer program.
Hi, I'm interested in this program because it unifies several of my passions: programming, learning about how the body works, and trying to do good in the world. I had previously been working at a small, local technology company, and had been feeling put-off with how meaningless the work felt. Through my own health journey, I discovered how much I love learning, and feeling healthy, and I want to learn how to help other people rediscover their health. That inspired a passion in me that I want to pursue as a career. This program would help me pursue that passion by familiarizing me with cancer-related bioinformatics projects, seeing how real data can be applied to improve people's lives, and developing connections with others in the field.
Describe any previous research experience or non-coursework coding projects that you've worked on.
I have little prior research experience, having just written one psychology research paper last year. Though I do have several open-source passion projects I've been working on. A Feast a Day (https://afeastaday.com) is a personalized meal planning newsletter, written mainly in C#. It uses nutrient data in recipe ingredients, along with user options, to choose a healthy variety of meals for the user each week. A Diary a Day (https://adiaryaday.com) is task and health tracking newsletter that I use keep track of things to do. Another one of my projects, https://tscanlon.com/vision-therapy/, is a collection of vision therapy tools that can be used to print off custom charts for various vision therapy exercises. In addition to those, I have work experience writing code for a global website. The most relevant bits from that would be: writing a customizable reporting website (including the reports) for sales data, helping write the app used to collect the data, and helping train a machine learning model to recognize products.
Which programming languages are you familiar with? Which are you strongest in? This may help us match up students with potential projects.
I have several years of experience working with C#, SQL, Javascript, Kotlin, Swift, and Powershell. Out of those, I'm strongest in C# and SQL. Though with my experience, I'd be able to work with or pick up any language relatively quickly. And yes, I have worked with bash as well.
Do you have specific career or educational goals after graduation? How will this internship program fit into your plan to meet these goals? (It's okay if you don't know yet!)
I do! Career-wise, I'd like to break into a healthcare related field. Bioinformatics or clinical informatics are both fields that pique my interest, and this internship would be great for helping make that transition. On a personal level, I'm inspired by the citizen science website: https://microbiomeprescription.com/. In a similar vein, I want to incorporate academic research into my A Feast a Day project to provide personalized nutrient suggestions for genetic or microbiome conditions that require different nutrient profiles.
Is there anything else we should know about you that makes you a great candidate for this summer program?
I would like to highlight my consistency and authenticity. I've been working on my coding projects for several years, and still look forward to improving them a little bit every day. Over that time, I've seen how things that can seem so insurmountable at the start, can be accomplished by just taking things day by day. I feel the same way about my education now. Where in the past, the thought of going back to college was overwhelming. Now, I have the ability to break things apart into bite-sized tasks and everything is manageable. For my authenticity, I don't use LLMs for any school work. I don't see the value in learning about something and not putting effort into it. Everything I wrote here I wrote myself. (Side note: I'm aware that machine learning and ai have valid use cases in medical research, and I have no qualms about its use there.)
